Bison attacks tourist in Yellowstone, tossing him after sudden charge

A bison attacked a tourist at Yellowstone National Park on Friday, goring and throwing him several feet and causing serious injuries.

• The bison charged the tourist near Bridge Bay Campground in Wyoming, tossing him approximately 2.5 meters (8 feet) into the air.
• The tourist, walking with his grandson, suffered serious hip and foot injuries; the grandson escaped unharmed.
• This was the second bison attack at Yellowstone in 2026; a 12-year-old was attacked on June 26 near Mud Volcano.
• Photographer Mike McCloud stated the bison was "attacking anything and everything" and that the tourist was initially more than 90 meters away, exceeding the recommended safe distance.

• The tourist has been identified as 65-year-old Carl McDaniel, a grandfather from Washington state, who sustained broken bones and other severe injuries.
• The encounter was captured on video, and despite his injuries McDaniel joked with rescuers.
