Rotterdam port faces legal pressure to phase out fossil fuel operations

A lawsuit has demanded the Port of Rotterdam Authority produce a concrete plan to wind down fossil fuel flows as the port pursues its own emissions reduction targets.

• Environmental group Advocates for the Future has filed a lawsuit arguing the Port of Rotterdam Authority is not doing enough to phase out fossil-based energy and wants a detailed phase-out plan.
• The Port Authority has set a target to cut its own direct and purchased energy emissions by 90% between 2019 and 2030, focusing on carbon capture, a hydrogen hub, and onshore power.
• Port Authority head of external relations Mark van Dijk said the port's industrial cluster emits about 29 million tonnes of CO2 a year, roughly half of the Netherlands' domestic emissions.
• Advocates for the Future director Maikel van Wissen said a state-owned enterprise should take legal obligations to reduce emissions and called for a plan that phases out fossil fuel dependency.
