Dale Vince to receive damages from Daily Mail publisher over misleading article

A green energy entrepreneur and Labour donor has won a damages claim after the publisher of the Daily Mail used his image alongside a headline about a different donor accused of sexual harassment.

• Three court of appeal judges overturned a high court ruling that had thrown out Vince's data protection claim against Associated Newspapers Limited.
• The June 2023 article, headlined “Labour repays £100,000 to sex pest donor”, referred to donor Davide Serra, but featured a photo of Vince holding a Just Stop Oil banner.
• Judge Sir Geoffrey Vos said ANL “failed to take care not to publish misleading information and images” and that the juxtaposition would have misled casual readers.
• Vince said the ruling exposed a flaw in libel law that assumes people read both headlines and articles in full, calling it “not fit for purpose” in the modern era.
