Port of Dover braces for summer travel delays as EU border system remains inactive

The Port of Dover has completed a £40m processing facility, but French authorities have not activated the new Entry Exit System kiosks.

• Doug Bannister, chief executive of the port, said the Western Docks facility built for biometric checks is not being used because the technology has not been activated.
• The port declared a critical incident in May half-term after waiting times exceeded four hours with about 8,500 outbound vehicles.
• The port expects up to 10,000 outbound cars on Saturday and 10,500 on both 24 and 25 July.
• The UK Department for Transport announced £20m in new funding to reduce delays in Kent.
