Egyptian advisor announces initiative to generate solar power from factory rooftops

Adviser to Egypt's Minister of Industry has announced a plan to install solar panels on 7,000 factories, aiming to generate 1,000 megawatts of clean energy.

• Engineer Hussein al-Ghazawy, adviser to the Minister of Industry, announced the "Shams al-Sinaa" initiative to utilize roofs of approximately 7,000 factories across Egypt for solar power generation.
• The initiative targets an initial capacity of 1,000 megawatts as a step toward integrating renewable energy into the industrial sector.
• Al-Ghazawy said the industrial sector consumes 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, and a 25% reduction would save 300 million cubic meters, enough for 500,000 housing units.
• Al-Ghazawy stated that Egypt ranked sixth globally in ceramic production in 2023 but has fallen to ninth or tenth, and efforts aim to restore that position by reducing production costs through gas rationalization.
