Entrepreneur sells rare tropical fruits by gram and piece in Egypt's Sharkia governorate

A young farmer in Sharkia has begun selling locally-grown exotic fruits by the piece and by the gram, making them affordable to consumers.

• Mohamed Abdel Meguid, a farmer from Darb Negm, said he sells fruits such as jackfruit, dragon fruit, and lychee by the clove and gram to reduce costs for buyers.
• Abdel Meguid said he has succeeded in cultivating and acclimatizing these varieties locally, including jackfruit, which previously cost over 5,000 Egyptian pounds per imported fruit.
• He stated that after local cultivation, the price of jackfruit dropped to around 350 Egyptian pounds per kilogram, and he cuts open the fruit to sell portions by the gram.
• Prices he cited for other local fruits: lychee 450-600 EGP/kg, dragon fruit 150-350 EGP/kg, passion fruit 200-300 EGP/kg, and langsat 150-250 EGP/kg.
