Nigerian military frees 44 abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo state rescue operation

Nigeria's military has freed all 44 children and teachers kidnapped from three schools in Oyo state two months ago, and arrested several suspects.

• The military said several soldiers died during the month-long rescue operation involving police, intelligence agencies, and local vigilante groups.
• Army spokesman Danjuma Jonah Danjuma said the freed captives are receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital and will return home at a later date.
• Hassan Ajibola, head of the Oyo State Teachers' Union, urged authorities to fully implement the Safe School Initiative, including deploying security personnel and fencing school premises.
• The abductions occurred on 15 May at three schools in Osiire district; the military said it arrested a number of suspects and plans further operations.
