Amnesty warns African states of consequences of receiving US deportees

Amnesty International has condemned the deportation of 11 people to Eswatini as illegal, the fourth such transfer under a secret bilateral agreement.

• Amnesty International called on Eswatini to stop facilitating transfers from the United States, saying the deportations are illegal and lead to arbitrary detention and lack of due process.
• The US has deported 11 people to Eswatini, the fourth such transfer since July 2025, bringing the total to about 30 individuals.
• Eswatini agreed to receive up to 160 deportees in exchange for $5.1 million for border security, according to documents obtained by Amnesty.
• At least 13 African countries have received or agreed to receive deportees from the US, including Rwanda which signed a $7.5 million agreement for 250 people.
