Palestinian in Gaza recycles scrap batteries into new ones using artificial intelligence

A 28-year-old Palestinian in Gaza has launched a workshop that re‑manufactures batteries from discarded materials, aided by AI and online tutorials, to address the territory's electricity crisis.

• The workshop in al‑Qarara, southern Gaza, was founded by Firas Bateen after a former battery factory was destroyed in the war, he told Al Jazeera.
• Bateen said the recycled batteries achieve 75–80 percent of the efficiency of imported ones.
• Raw material prices have surged sharply, Bateen said, with lead plates rising from 4 shekels per kilogram to over 20 shekels, and a single insulation roll now costs 30,000 shekels.
• Bateen stated that the workshop can theoretically produce three batteries daily, but the charging process – which may take up to 12 days for large batteries – limits actual output to a few units per week.
