Mexico asks US state attorneys general to investigate deaths of immigrants in ICE custody

Mexico formally requested US state attorneys general to probe the deaths of Mexican immigrants in ICE custody and sent demands to detention centers, following the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

• The Mexican foreign ministry said it formally requested US state attorneys general to criminally investigate cases of immigrants who died in ICE custody or during raids, and will send a similar request to the US Department of Justice.
• The government reported that 17 Mexican immigrants have died during immigration enforcement since the start of Donald Trump’s second term.
• Mexico sent letters to detention centers demanding an immediate halt to “actions or omissions” that led to deaths; the first letter was sent to the Adelanto facility in California.
• Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco also asked UN High Commissioner Volker Türk to gather information on the deaths and assess their compatibility with international human rights obligations.
