Alberta Separatist Referendum Campaigns Launch at Calgary Stampede

Albertans will vote in October on whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a binding referendum on separation.

• Liberal MP Corey Hogan, speaking at the Calgary Stampede, called separatism "a poison" and invited colleagues to promote national unity.
• Former Progressive Conservative lawmaker Thomas Lukaszuk opened the campaign headquarters of his pro-unity group, Forever Canadian, in Calgary.
• First Nations chiefs Samuel Crowfoot and Troy Knowlton said a binding referendum would threaten treaty rights and have launched a court challenge.
• Independence organizer Chris Scott, a participant in the 2021 Freedom Convoy, said Alberta has "no choice left" but to be independent.
